PREVIEW: Around the SoCal Top 25 for Week 7

It’s Round 2 of Trinity League play tonight, which will set the stage for next week’s anticipated showdown between nationally-ranked Mater Dei and St. John Bosco.  Taking centerstage tonight will be Mater Dei taking-on Orange Lutheran.

Mater Dei, ranked #3 nationally in the High School Football America’s Top 25, plus #1 in the California and Southern California Top 25’s that are developed with our proprietary algorithm, haven’t been challenged in their first six wins this season.  With sophomore quarterback J.T. Daniels leading the way, the Monarchs are averaging 56.6 points a game.  Daniels has thrown for over 2,200 yards and 35 touchdowns.  Defensively, Mater Dei has only allowed 35 points this season.

Orange Lutheran, ranked #8 in the latest High School Football America Southern California Top 25, is coming-off a 30-29 overtime victory over JSerra last week.  The Lancers are currently riding a three-game win streak.

OLu is also led by a sophomore quarterback.  Ryan Hilinski has thrown for 1,078 yards and eight touchdowns. Stan Berryhill is Hilinski favorite target with 30 catches.  Berryhill, who is averaging 122.5 yards in all-purpose yards per game, has scored six touchdowns, including one on a kickoff and the other on a punt return.  He’s even thrown a touchdown.  Dominik Austin is leading the ground game with 618 yards rushing with five touchdowns.  He’s also caught 11 balls, averaging 21.5 yards per catch.

St. John Bosco, ranked #6 in the nation and #2 in SoCal and California, will face #20 Santa Margarita tonight.

Bosco junior QB Re-al Mitchell is coming-off one of his best games of the season in last week’s 70-6 win over Servite.  Mitchell has completed over 65-percent of his passes for 1,072 yards with 11 TDs and three INTs.  He’s also rushed for 388 yards and seven scores.

Tonight’s third Trinity League game features #10 JSerra taking-on #21 Servite.

In the Mission League, Serra (Gardena) is riding a four-game win streak after opening the season with three straight losses.  Tonight, the Cavaliers will face Bishop Amat in a battle for first-place and strengthen the winner’s position for the Division I playoff field.  Serra leads the league with a 3-0 mark, Bishop Amat is 2-1.

Serra senior QB Jalani Eason has thrown for 1,588 yards and 13 touchdowns, and also rushed for 674 yards and five scores.

Alemany, which enters the night a half-game behind Serra with a 2-0 league mark, will be looking for its third straight win when it takes-on #20 Chaminade.  This game has a little extra meaning since Chaminade junior quarterback Brevin White transferred from Alemany at the end of last season.

First-place in the Sunset League will be up-for-grabs when #16 Edison (5-1) faces Los Alamitos (4-2).  Both teams are 1-0 in league play.

In another battle for first place, n the Sunbelt League, #19 Heritage (6-0) faces Elsinore (5-1).  Both teams are 1-0.  Heritage is a perfect 31-0 in Sunbelt League play.

#22 Charter Oak (6-0) is on the road against Chino (4-2) in a Hacienda League game.  Both teams enter the game with 1-0 league records.  Charter Oak head coach Lou Farrar will be going after his 300th career victory.

#24 Valencia (4-2, 1-0 Foothill League) is looking to build-on last week’s impressive defensive effort against former #25 Hart when it faces Golden Valley (4-2, 0-1 Foothill).  The Vikings came-up with nine sacks last week and forced six turnovers.
