There were coin flips Friday night after JSerra, Orange Lutheran and Servite finished in a three-way tie for the third place and the league’s third CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 playoff spot.  There was a chance that there could have been a five-way tie for second place, but Mater Dei (8-2, 3-2 Trinity League) took care of that by beating Santa Margarita 45-14, which left the Monarchs in second place all by themselves.

The third place logjam was created by JSerra’s 45-40 win over OLu and St. John Bosco‘s 70-7 rout of Servite, which left JSerra, OLu and Servite with 2-3 marks.  When all the flipping was done, Orange Lutheran became the league’s third place team in the upcoming postseason with the brackets being released Sunday morning.  As a result of the flips, JSerra was named the Trinity’s #4 team, while Servite finishes #5.  JSerra and Servite can both apply for the division’s two at-large berths.  In the head-to-head match-up between the two, Servite came-out the winner.

Mater Dei rebounded from last week’s upset loss to JSerra behind freshman quarterback JT Daniels and running back Brandon LaMarche.  Both players accounted for 248 yards from their respective positions.  Daniels threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns, giving him 28 TDs so far this year.  LaMarche rushed for 248 yards and two touchdowns.

Santa Margarita ends the season 5-5 and 1-4 in the Trinity League.

For the second straight week, JSerra played an outstanding fourth quarter, scoring 21 points to beat OLu, which came into the game controlling its destiny.  A Lancer win would have given the school a playoff berth without a flip.

St. John Bosco (10-0, 5-0 Trinity League) won its 21st straight league game with another impressive offensive outburst against Servite.  Friday night’s 7o points left the Braves with 586 points or an average of 58.6 points scored per game.  It was the second time Bosco scored 70 or more points this season.  It was also the ninth game this season where the Braves forced a running clock in the fourth quarter.
