It’s seems like it happens every three years – discussions and proposals to expand Pennsylvania beyond its current four class system in football.

Out in the western part of the state, one school official, Bob Tonkin of Brookville High School, who chairs the District 9 football steering committee, is working on plan that would add two classes – 6A and 5A – plus shrink the season from 16 weeks to 15.

Adding new classes has been debated in 2003, 2006 and 2009 and rejected each time by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Association.  In order to expand, Tonkin’s proposal would take three separate PIAA votes and couldn’t be put in-place until the 2016 season.  The last time the PIAA expanded was in 1980 when AAAA was added.

Recently our partners at EasternPAFootball.com examined whether the state should consider expanding. Click here to read story that compared Pennsylvania with other states.
