Maine South, which lost to #19 Loyola Academy 44-43 during the regular season, got revenge Saturday night, defeating the defending 2015 Class 8A champs 27-17 in the 2016 8A title game at the University of Illinois in Champaign. Even with the close one-point September loss, many consider this one a huge upset because the Hawks entered the postseason as the 26th seed.  The win snapped Loyola’s (14-1) 30-game win streak.

Maine South quarterback Nick Leongas scored the game-winning touchdown on a 17-yard touchdown run, giving Maine South (11-3) a 24-17 lead early in the fourth quarter.  It was Leongas’ second TD of the game.

Maine South has now won six state football titles.
