Pennsylvania high school football player collapses and dies during workout

St. Joseph's Prep Hawks footballOur hearts and prayers go out to the family of Ryan Gillyard and the St. Joseph’s Prep (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) football family today.

The 15-year Gillyard collapsed during a conditioning workout on Saturday and later died after being rushed to the hospital.

The school, which has won the last two Pennsylvania 4A state championships, released this statement:

“The St. Joseph’s Prep community is deeply saddened by the tragic death of our freshman Ryan Gillyard and our condolences go out to his parents and family. Ryan was a great person and someone we were proud to have as part of our community. We will do whatever we can to support his family and friends, especially the members of the freshman class and the football team of which he was a member, and our thoughts and prayers are with them all.”
