Playoffs open in Alaska this weekend

With Big, Medium and Small School monikers gone, Alaska is ready to start its 2017 playoffs with Division I, II and III championships up for grabs.

In Division I, Chugiak (8-0), No. 2 in the High School Football America Alaska Top 5, will host Service (3-5) on Friday.  The winner of the Chugiak-Service game gets the winner of Lathrop (3-5) and Bartlett (5-3), ranked No. 5 in our Top 5.

On the other side of the bracket, defending champ East (7-1), ranked No. 4 in the HSFA Alaska Top 5, plays Wasilla (2-6), while West (4-4) takes-on No. 3 Colony (7-1) in the other quarterfinal.

In Division II, Soldotna (8-0) will be going after its sixth straight state championship.  The Stars will play North Pole (6-2) on Saturday.  In the other semifinal, Palmer (4-4) plays Thunder Mountain (6-1).

Eielson (6-2), winner of four of the last five small school titles, will play Homer (7-1) Saturday in the Division III semis.  Nikiski (4-3) takes-on Barrow (5-2) in the other semifinal.
