The Turnaround: Lubbock Opens with OT win

Lubbock beats Seminole 20-17 in OT

What a crazy way to start the 2017 season. The Westerners pulled one off over a very
good Seminole Indians team, winning 20-17 in overtime.

We were down three times in the game and battled back each time, finally culminating in overtime with an Isaiah Johnson 25 yard touchdown run. Following Seminoles’ possession in overtime, which resulted in a field goal, we took the field needing to either tie with a field goal or win it with a TD. Johnson took care of the latter with an absolutely mind-boggling run, which I still cannot fathom.

Johnson got hit at the line of scrimmage. He then squirmed inside, which is where we were trying to go. He sidestepped someone inside and was hit by two defenders at the same time. He slipped out of their grasp (I don’t know how) and emerged from a muddied scrum out of the clear blue sky and went untouched the last 15 yards for the winning score. I have never seen a run anything like the one I witnessed on Friday night.

From the time Isaiah hit the end zone until the time we shook hands, it’s all a blur. It was chaos on the field, a good kind of chaos. First, our team rushed the field to to celebrate in the end zone. Somehow I ended up in the air with someone holding me up. The next thing I know the field is covered with fans. The student section and fans rushed the field to celebrate. In 22 years of coaching I have never been a part of something like that. I still don’t know everything that happened.

Coach Jason Strunk poses for post-game victory pic with family Friday night.

There are so many good things that went on Friday night, it’s hard to touch upon it all. I will do my best to do so but just know my writing cannot justify what transpired on Friday night. You had to be there. You had to see it. You have to know about LHS to get the true feeling of that kind of win.

It was the best night in my coaching career. There is no doubt about it. If you want to know why, just keep reading my blog’s over the course of this season. It will become crystal clear as to why our overtime win was the best moment in my career TO DATE.

Our finest day is yet unknown. But this could be the catalyst for something bigger down the road for the Westerners.

Good work, Westerners.

These Guys

-Kwami Wilborn tossed 2 TD’s and got things done on his feet.

-Kristian Coleman hauled in 31 yard and 8 yard TD receptions, both in the corner of the end zone.

-Cristian Jimenez recorded 16 tackles, 1 sack and added 45 receiving yards on offense. What a performance!

-Anthony Wiggins recovered an onside kick for us.

-Our defense did a tremendous job. What an effort! From DC Nate Gensler to LB’ers Milam Mayfield and Andrew Dotray, these guys won the game for us. Gutsy performance.

-Manny “Money” Rodriguez drilled both his PAT’s. The last one tied the game with 10 seconds remaining.

-Our band was lights out Friday night. Our student section was as well. They provide an exciting atmosphere for us every Friday night. Good work!

That’s it. Moving onto Andrews now.

Until next time…FIO.
