Bishop Gorman heads into 2023 in its regular spot, No. 1 in the High School Football America Nevada Top 10, powered by NFL Play Football. There’s been only two weeks since we began using our proprietary algorithm for our rankings that the Gaels haven’t been No. 1. That was at the end of the 2019 season when Liberty snapped BG’s streak of ten straight state titles.

Gorman with its tough national schedule will also be in the national championship conversation. The Gaels are ranked No. 5 in the Preseason HSFA 300 national rankings.

BG’s regular season schedule features five teams in the preseason rankings — No. 9 Miami Central (Florida), No. 22 Corona Centennial (California), No. 74 Corner Canyon (Utah), No. 85 Long Beach Poly (California) and Liberty (No. 177).

Liberty is our preseason No. 1 in the state. The Patriots will get tested in Week 1 when they travel to Southern California to play defending national champ St. John Bosco. The Braves are ranked No. 2 in the nation.

This year marks the first year under the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s new 5A alignment. Class 5A has been split into three specific divisions — 5A I, 5A II and 5A III.

The realignment was caused by Gorman’s dominance. The Gaels have won 12 of the last 13 state titles in the state largest classification. The new plan puts the Gaels in 5A I with Arbor View, Coronado, Desert Pines, Liberty, Silverado, Shadow Ridge. There are no northern schools in this classification.

A state champ will be crowned in all three 5A divisions.

Below are the other two 5A classifications:

Class 5A-II (North): Bishop Manogue, Damonte Ranch, McQueen, Reed, Reno, Spanish Springs. Class 5A-II (South): Basic, Faith Lutheran, Durango, Foothill, Green Valley, Las Vegas, Sierra Vista

Class 5A-III (North): Carson, Douglas, Galena, Hug, North Valleys, Wooster. Class 5A-III (South): Cimarron-Memorial, Clark, Desert Oasis, Legacy, Palo Verde, Rancho, Spring Valley
