The 2024 Virginia high school football championships will be played Saturday at three locations across the state — Harrisonburg, Lynchburg and Salem.
Three teams in the High School Football America 300 national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football, will be going after state crowns.
It’s a battle of unbeatens in Class 6 with No. 245 Oscar Smith squaring-off with James Madison, which will have a home field advantage with the game being played at James Madison University.
Oscar Smith is looking for its first state title since 2021 and the school’s fourth overall. On the other hand, James Madison is looking for its first-ever title. the Warhawks were runner-ups in 2021 and 2022.
In Class 5, Maury, ranked No. 171 in the nation, tries to go back-to-back against Briar Wood. The Commodores also won a state title in 2019.
Maury has dominated most of its opponents this year. Coming into the game at JMU, the Commodores have outscored opponents 739-89.
Briar Woods is looking for its first state championship since a three-peat from 2010 through 2012. The Falcons finished runner-up in 2013, in their only other state final appearance.
No. 166 Phoebus is going after a four-peat. The Phantoms bring a 48-game win streak into the Class 4 final against Varina.
Overall, Phoebus owns 10 state titles, while Varina’s only championship came in 2021.
In Class 3, Liberty Christian is trying to go back-to-back when it plays Kettle Run, which is looking for its first-ever title. LC is led by the state’s No. 1 college football prospect, Gideon Davison, a 4-star running back, who has signed with Clemson.
Strasburg is trying to end a long championship drought when it plays Graham in the Class 2 championship game in Salem. The Rams haven’t won a state title since 1995. They own four overall.
Graham also have four state crowns with the last coming in 2022.
Essex is trying to change last year’s silver to gold this year. The Trojans will play Grayson County in the Class 1 championship. This will be GC’s first-ever state championship appearance.
