All eyes will be on Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons, this week as the Georgia High School Association crowns its 2024 state champs in both boys’ tackle and girls’ flag.
The 6A, 5A and 4A boys’ championship games feature head-to-head meetings with teams in our High School Football America 300 national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football.
6A – No. 8 Carrollton vs. No. 32 Grayson
The big question is will Julian “JuJu” Lewis leave high school with a Georgia high school football championship? The Colorado-signee is playing in his second championship game.
Lewis lost in the 2022 7A championship game to Mill Creek 70-35. Last year, the Trojans were beaten in the state quarterfinals by eventual runner-up Walton.
According to Georgia High School Football Daily (GHSFD), Lewis is 39-3 with 10,484 yards passing (ninth in GHSA history) and 140 touchdowns (fifth all-time).
After losing to Collins Hill by one point in its season opener, Grayson has won 13 straight. Included in that streak was the Rams avenging that CH loss in the state quarters.
Grayson is led by junior QB Travis Burgess, who has tossed 22 touchdowns against just four interceptions.
Overall, Carrollton is looking for its eighth high school football championship. Grayson is seeking its fourth state title.
This will be the first matchup between the two schools.
5A – No. 2 Milton vs. No. 51 Langston Hughes
While Milton no longer has a shot at the HFSA national championship, since Mater Dei (California) wrapped it up over the week, the Eagles can still be the top public school in the nation.
The reigning 7A champs have had an outstanding 2024 season with wins against No. 17 American Heritage (Plantation, Florida), No. 20 Buford, No. 41 Lee County, No. 104 Roswell, No. 211 Houston County and No. 239 Gainesville.
Milton has been an offensive juggernaut, averaging over 43-points a game with Miami (Florida)-signee Luke Nickel at the helm with over 3,300 passing yards wtih 40 touchdowns. Eastern Kentucky-recruit T.J. Lester has scored 24 rushing touchdown with over 1,600 yards rushing.
Langston Hughes reached the finals by beating 2023 6A champ Thomas County Central and 2023 5A champ Coffee. A win against Milton would mean the Panthers will have beaten the three top classification champs from 2023.
Hughes’ offensive line features Florida-signee Tavaris Dice and Dontrell Glover, a Georgia-signee.
LH the 6A title in 2022, the school’s only state championship.
4A – No. 185 Marist vs. No. 300 North Oconee
The 4A championship game will be a battle between two teams that haven’t lost this year.
Marist is led by the legendary Alan Chadwick, who is looking for its fourth title in his 40th year. Like its coach, the War Eagles’ offense still run an old-school option offense with the run game coming first.
According to GHSFD, Marist is averaging 268.6 yards on the ground per game.
North Oconee is seeking its first-ever championship. The Titans use a more balanced offense, averaging over 170 yards rushing and 222+ yards passing per game.
3A – Jefferson vs. Calhoun
Twelve years ago, these two met for the 2A state title in the Georgia Dome. Jefferson won they ’12 game 31-14, which was the last time the school won a state crown.

Gavin Markey is a great dual-threat QB for Jefferson. He’s passed for 1,424 yards and rushed for 1,568.
Calhoun is led by a freshman quarterback. Trace Hawkins has tossed for 1,893 yards and 23 touchdowns against only one interception.
3A-A Private – Prince Avenue Christian vs. Hebron Christian
These two played during the regular season about a month-and-a-half ago. PAC beat the Lions 34-31.
Prince Avenue is looking for a three-peat and fourth overall state championship. Only 13 Georgia teams have won three straight high school football championships.
Hebron is looking for its first-ever high school football championship. However, the Lions head coach, Jonathan Gess won six state titles at Eagle’s Landing Christian.
2A – Burke County vs. Carver (Columbus)
Both schools are looking to end state championship droughts. Carver hasn’t hoisted a state championship since 2007. Burke County is looking to add to its gold medal won in 2011.
According to GHSFD, both teams are run heavy. Burke County’s leading rusher is A’Merre Williams with 1,674 and 31 touchdowns. Two Carver backs have topped the 1,000-yard plateur – Kobe Caslin (1,343 yards) and Kelston Tarver (1,268 yards).
1A Division I – Bowdon vs. Brooks County
