Most of the Super 25 high school football teams are looking forward to the playoffs, but IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) is waiting to see if it will have one more game.

The Ascenders (9-0), ranked No. 7 in the Super 25 football rankings, played their last game on Oct. 31 against Eastern Christian Academy (Elkton, Md.) and do not play for a state title. There were talks about a possible TV game between IMG and No. 22 Gilman (Baltimore), which wrapped up its season with its 35-28 defeat of McDonogh (Owings Mills) on Nov. 7, but that game, tentatively scheduled for last week, fell through.

“We had good conversations with them regarding playing a bowl game after the McDonogh game, pending administrative approval and my understanding is they never got administrative approval,” IMG coach Kevin Wright said.

There’s still a possibility the Ascenders could play a Georgia team in a game on ESPNU on Dec. 18. They are hoping to find out next week if the matchup will happen.

“My understanding is it would be the state champion from Georgia or the highest rated team from Georgia,” Wright said. “The assumption is that it would be one of those three teams (No. 3 Colquitt County (Moultrie), No. 13 Grayson (Loganville) or regionally ranked Roswell). I think they’re trying to cover their bases because they have three undefeated teams. A Georgia-Florida game would make sense. We’re supposed to know by next week on the details.”
