In the land of earthquakes, the powerful CIF-Southern Section shook-up the high school football landscape by approving a competitive equity formula for the 2016 playoffs that will act like the RPI power rankings in college sports.

Under the plan, which was the brought forth by CIF-SS Commissioner Rob Wigod, football teams will be placed in playoff divisions based on a power rankings formula.  That formula will consider regular season records over the last two years, plus playoff performance and strength of schedule.

Prior to Wednesday’s vote, teams were placed in playoff divisions based on which leagues the played in.  For example — the Pac-5 Division, the section’s largest, was comprised of teams from the Big VIII, Marmonte, Mission, Moore and Trinity Leagues.

The proposal passed by a 74-10 vote.
