For the second straight year, Soldotna (1-0) starts the high school football season by defeating Alaska’s defending Big School champ. Friday night, the four-time Medium School champ Stars beat West (0-1) 49-30, which extended the school’s win streak to 40 straight.
Soldotna dominated the scoreboard and the stat sheet, according to the Alaska Dispatch News, with 534 yards of total offense. The Stars also controlled time of possession, keeping the ball for 33 minutes and 12 seconds. Junior fullback Brenner Furlong rushed for 215 yards and two touchdowns. The Stars’ Wing-T offense grounded-out 423 yards rushing.

Last season, Soldotna, which has won seven state titles in nine years under head coach Galen Brantley, beat South 21-17 to start the season. The West Eagles will be looking for the school’s third Big School title in the last four years under head coach Tim Davis. During Davis’ time at the helm, West has won three state crowns.
