Bishop Gorman strengthened its grip on the top spot in the nation by taking-down its fourth state in four weeks. The Gaels beat Kahuku, the top team in Hawaii, 35-7 Saturday night. Gorman has now beaten teams from California, Florida, Hawaii and Texas.
Ohio State-bound Tate Martell threw for four touchdowns and ran for another as Gorman pushed its win streak to 43 straight games. In two weeks, the Gaels will square-off with St. Thomas Aquinas, which is ranked #11 heading into the release of Sunday’s national Top 25.
In the only Top 25 game, #2 IMG Academy (Florida) beat #9 St. John’s College High School (Washington, D.C.) 35-14. The Ascenders have now beaten three Top 25 teams. Aside from SJC, IMG has been #12 Grayson (Georgia) and #16 Corona Centennial (California). St. John’s is now 3-1 with wins over former #11 Pittsburgh Central Catholic (Pennsylvania) and former #13 St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, New Jersey). Next week, SJC will play its fourth Top 25 team in five weeks when it faces #23 Good Counsel (Maryland).
Aside from St. John’s, two other Top 25 teams to tasted defeat this weekend. #10 Mallard Creek (North Carolina) lost to #35 South Pointe (South Carolina), while #18 St. Edward (Ohio) lost to Elder (Ohio).
#3 Mater Dei (California) hit the 60 point mark for the third time in four weeks with a 62-7 win over Upland (California). The Monarchs have outscored their opponents 236-21.
#4 DeMatha (Maryland) picked-up an impressive win over McDonogh, the #3 team in Maryland. In Florida, #6 Miami Central survived a 29-27 scare from Norland. #7 St. John Bosco (California) and #8 Colerain (Ohio) picked-up blowout wins.
