Having been allowed to watch hundreds, if not thousands, of high school football practices during my 40+ years in the business, I was surprised to see New Jersey is moving to limiting the amount of contact during high school football practices to 90 minutes per session.  This according to a story in today’s Star-Ledger.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against restricting contact, I’m just surprised that anyone believes that today’s football teams actually hit for 90 minutes each practice.

According to the newspaper, the pending mandate was recommended by the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association‘s Medical Advisory Committee.  Currently, the NJSIAA doesn’t have limitations on full-contact practices.  If approved, the new rules could take effect as soon as next year.
