It’s showdown time for Who’s No. 1 in the High School Football America 100 national high school football rankings. Friday night, No. 1 Mater Dei will square-off with No. 2 St. John Bosco in Southern California in what should be the first of two heavyweight matchups.

Last year, SJB beat Mater Dei, our two-time defending national champs during the regular season, which gave the Braves the Trinity League title, but in the CIF-Southern Section Division I championship, the Monarchs turned the table on their way to a second straight state championship.

As far as the new rankings, St. Frances Academy (Maryland) continues its climb back after losing to Mater Dei about a month ago. The Panthers easily handled No. 4 IMG Academy (Florida) on Friday, which moves SFA from No. 4 to No. 3 this week.

The crazy closeness of games in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference keeps three teams in the Top 25 with Good Counsel (Maryland) leading the way at No. 19, followed by Gonzaga (Washington, DC) at No. 20 and DeMatha (Maryland) at No. 21. Two weeks ago, Good Counsel beat Gonzaga in five overtimes, but this week lost to St. John’s College High School (Washington, DC) in the last minute. Gonzaga rebounded from its loss to GC by beating DeMatha 28-26. This week, Good Counsel plays DeMatha in its annual rivalry game.

St. John’s climbs to No. 36 this week after its win over Good Counsel.

Servite (California), which a couple of weeks ago almost upset St. John Bosco breaks into the Top 100 after upsetting former No. 33 JSerra. The Friars are at No. 77 this week, while JSerra tumbles to No. 79.

Joining the Friars as newbies to the national high school football rankings this week — Covington Catholic (Kentucky) at No. 89 and La Salle (Ohio) at No. 90.

Three-time Louisiana state champ Edna Karr returns to the Top 100 at No. 90.
