Two of the National Football League’s newest breed of quarterbacks — Patrick Mahomes and Deshuan Watson — will go head-to-head in Sunday’s AFC Divisional Game between the Kansas City Chief and Houston Texans.
Both players had outstanding high school football careers as dual-threat QB’s.
Watson played for Gainesville High in Gainesville, Georgia where he started as a freshman. When he left the Red Elephants, he owned several state records, including total yards (17,134), total touchdowns (218), career passing yards (13,077), and career passing touchdowns (155). He also rushed for 4,057 yards and 63 touchdowns.
During his junior season, Watson led Gainesville to a state championship. During his sophomore and seniors seasons, the Red Elephants lost in the state semifinals
Mahomes played at Whitehouse High School in Texas. The son of former Major League Baseball pitcher Pat Mahomes, the younger Mahomes was a three-sport (baseball, basketball, football) athlete.
In two years at the helm of Whitehouse’s offense, Mahomes tossed 96 touchdowns, with 50 coming during his senior season. He only threw 15 interceptions. He completed over 57-percent of his passes during his career for 8,458.
