Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is suggesting that the Michigan High School Athletic Association flip-flop the high school sports seasons that would include moving football into the Spring. It’s all part of the governor’s Michigan Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap that was unveiled on Tuesday.

Currently, Michigan is is Phase 3 of a six-phase plan of returning to school. If the state moves to Phase 4, high school sports will be allowed to return and Whitmer discussed non-contact sports like golf, tennis and track and field being moved to the Fall, while a contact sport like football could be moved to the Spring with an adherence to guidelines set-up by the MHSAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations. If the state enters Phase 4, but has to return to Phase 3, then high school athletics would be stopped.

During her news conference, Whitmer said she expects the MHSSAA to make a decision on the seasons between July 20 and July 25.
The plan does allow for spectators at high school games, but everyone must wear a mask and adhere to social distancing of 6-feet at all times.
