The Arizona Cardinals are proud to announce the Week 2 winners of their Coach and Player of the Week awards.

This week, the Cardinals are honoring one of their own, former Cardinal Bobby Newcombe, the current head football coach at Casteel High School, ranked No. 6 in the High School Football America Arizona Top 10.

Newcombe, who was taken by the Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2001 NFL Draft as a quarterback, is in his third season as the head coach of the Colts.

This week’s Player of the Week is senior running back Eli Sanders of Chandler High School. Sanders rushed for over 200 yards and four touchdowns in the Wolves’ 64-0 defeat of Pinnacle. Chandler is currently ranked No. 1 in the High School Football America Arizona Top 10 and ranked No. 30 in the High School Football America national rankings.

Sanders has given his verbal commitment to Boise State.

The weekly awards are selected by a local panel of sports figures, including Cardinals defensive lineman Corey Peters, former high school football coach Kelly Epley, former 12 News sports anchor Bruce Cooper, 3TV/CBS 5 sports anchor Tresa Tudrick, high school broadcaster Michael Carotenuto, and Arizona Republic high school writer Richard Obert.

Newcombe is given a plaque and a $1,000 check on behalf of Cardinals Charities in support of the Casteel football program.

Sanders was presented a glass trophy on Wednesday via zoom.
