As high school football enters in the postseason in various states, COVID-19 is becoming an all-or-nothing proposition for teams.
The Deseret News reports that three teams are forfeiting their opening round games this weekend, thus ending their seasons and dreams of a run to a state championship. Fremont and Uintah announced earlier this week that they were forfeiting their first round games and on Thursday, Kearns, the No. 5 seed in the state’s biggest classification, Class 6A, announced it had a third player test positive for the coronavirus and was forfeiting next week’s game, because they are going into a 14-day quarantine.

Below is a statement from the Granite School District:
“We have worked closely with the Health Department to scrutinize the case information and can confirm at this time that our football team now has 3-confirmed cases within that 14-day window. In addition to the school wide dismissal, we have received the recommendation to dismiss the football team for this same time period. We have agonized over the fact that this dismissal will effectively end the football team’s season. We acknowledge the great success they have experienced this season. We sincerely regret this is the case but readily acknowledge that the safety for our students and employees will continue to be paramount above all else.”
