Mater Dei (California) controls its own destiny in its drive for its fourth High School Football America national championship in the last six years. The Monarchs took control of the No. 1 spot in the HSFA 300 with a 17-7 defeat of former No. 2 St. John Bosco (California) Friday night in Southern California.

If Mater Dei can run-the-table to a California Open Division title, the national crown will stay in Santa Ana.

However, the road to a 2022 national championship still has plenty obstacles for MD with three Trinity League games left. This week, the Monarchs play No. 87 Orange Lutheran followed by a matchup against No. 91 Santa Margarita on October 21. They’ll close-out the regular season against longtime rival Servite on October 27.

After that, Mater Dei will head into an uber-tough CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoff field that will be chock-full of Top 100 teams. And, don’t forget, there’s also a good chance there will be a Mater Dei/St. John Bosco Part II during the CIF-SS playoffs.

In the northern part of the state, No. 45 Serra (San Mateo) or No. 46 Folsom appear have the inside track to an Open Division championship game.

Bosco’s dreams of a second HSFA national title are still alive, but the Braves will need a win against Mater Dei, in a possible rematch, and some help. Friday’s loss drops SJB to No. 5 in the latest national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football.

Buford (Georgia) is our new No. 2. The Wolves, who have won three straight Georgia state titles, will test that ranking against No. 20 Mill Creek (Georgia) in a huge 7A Region 8 game Friday night.

Maryland’s St. Frances Academy inches-up a notch to No. 3 this week. The Panthers are 5-0, but only have four regular season games left and a possible GEICO State Champions Bowl game.

SFA will be highly-favored to win its games against Maryland’s Arundel (October 28), Connecticut’s St. Thomas More (November 4) and Canada’s Clarkson North (November 11). The Panthers then close-out the regular season against No. 14 IMG Academy (Florida).

Miami Central is No. 4 in the HSFA 100 after an impressive 42-7 win over arch-rival Miami Northwestern on Friday. The Rockets next big test will be in two weeks when they’ll face No. 24 Miami Columbus.

There are seven new faces in the Top 300 this week, along with two teams that re-enter the national rankings.

Warren Central (Indiana) re-enters at No. 246 and Christ Presbyterian Academy (Tennessee) is ranked No. 275 this week.

The new teams are:

  • No. 194 Teurlings Catholic (Louisiana)
  • No. 230 Houston County (Georgia)
  • No. 232 Madison (San Diego, Callifornia)
  • No. 276 Prince Avenue Christian (Georgia)
  • No. 296 Centennial (Burleson, Texas)
  • No. 297 Clinton (Mississippi)
  • No. 300 Gainesville (Georgia)
