With the postseason upon us in California, the road to a second straight High School Football America national championship for Mater Dei is mapped out. The Monarchs, who closed-out the regular season with their 27th straight win, will open the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 playoffs in two weeks against a Trinity League opponent.

The CIF-SS D1 bracket is made-up of ten teams ranked in our Top 100, powered by NFL Play Football.

After MD’s first round bye this, the Monarchs face the winner of the first round game between No. 97 JSerra and No. 99 Santa Margarita. JSerra lost a hard-fought 21-13 decision to the Monarchs on September 30. Two weeks ago, Mater Dei cruised by Santa Margarita 52-7.

If Mater Dei wins its quarterfinal matchup, it will face the winner of the game between No. 40 Long Beach Poly and No. 67 Los Alamitos in the semifinals.

The other side of the bracket features No. 5 St. John Bosco, No. 15 Corona Centennial, No. 41 Mission Viejo, No. 83 Edison (Huntington Beach) and No. 10 Orange Lutheran.

If Mater Dei can run the table, they’ll meet a highly-ranked opponent from the northern part of the state in the Open Division championship.

That’s the roadmap, however, with so many quality opponents in front of them, a fourth national title in six years isn’t guaranteed.

As far as the new HSFA 300, Basha (Arizona) ended Chandler (Arizona) dreams of national championship. The Bears edged Wolves 14-7 on two touchdowns from Deshaun Buchanan.

The win moves Basha from No. 104 to No. 72 in the latest rankings created with the HSFA proprietary algorithm. Chandler tumbles from No. 18 to No. 35.

North Carolina’s Chamber moves into the Top 100 after beating Mallard Creek 27-13. Chambers jumps from No. 115 to No. 96 in the latest rankings. MC drops from No. 82 to No. 104.

New to the HSFA 300 this week:

  • No. 203 Andrew Jackson (Jacksonville, Florida)
  • No. 225 St. Bonaventure (California)
  • No. 297 Granite Hills (El Cajon, California)
  • No. 298 Spartanburg (South Carolina)
  • No. 300 Hartselle (Alabama)
