The third time was the charm for Massillon Washington against Archbishop Hoban in the Ohio Division II state championship game. Thursday night, the Tigers, ranked No. 9 in the High School Football America 300, powered by NFL Play Football, beat No. 23 Hoban 7-2 for the school’s first state title during the Ohio High School Athletic Association playoff era.
Massillon entered the game at Tom Benson Stadium on the campus of the Pro Football Hall of Fame with an 0-2 record against Hoban in state championship games. The Knights won 35-26 in 2020 and 42-28 in 2018.
The only touchdown, in the defensive battle, came on a Mylen Lenix 6-yard run.
The only other points came on a safety.
The championship is the first for Massillon since 1970, which was before the OHSAA playoff era. Overall, the title is considered the 25th overall for the legendary program.
Hoban was playing in its eight state championship game in the last nine years. The Knights own six state titles under head coach Jim Tyrrell.
