209 teams that began 2023 in the High School Football America 300 national rankings, end the year in our Top 300, powered by NFL Play Football. And, after falling from No. 1 twice during the season, Southern California’s Mater Dei finishes the year atop our rankings created with our proprietary algorithm.

The national championship is the fourth for Mater Dei since 2017. The Monarchs also won the national title in 2018 and 2021.

Mater Dei began the year as the No. 1 team in America, but dropped to No. 2 at the end of August when St. John Bosco (California) rose to the top spot on the strength of a 2-0 start that included beating No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas (Florida). The Monarchs returned to No. 1 in mid-September. However, after losing to Bosco in mid-October, MD fell to No. 3. That was the last and only loss of 2023 for the Monarchs.

Twelve of the Monarchs’ 13 wins came against teams that finished inside our Top 107 — No. 3 St. John Bosco (California), No. 15 Kahuku, No. 16 Corona Centennial (California), No. 29 Sierra Canyon (California) No. 51 St. Frances Academy (Maryland), No. 52 Serra (San Mateo, California), No. 78 Servite (California), No. 80 Orange Lutheran (California), No. 81 Santa Margarita (California), No. 92 Creekside (Georgia) and No. 107 JSerra (California) twice.

Falling in behind Mater Dei is Florida Class 1M state champ Chaminade-Madonna at No. 2. St. John Bosco finishes No. 3, followed by No. 4 IMG Academy (Florida) and Bishop Gorman (Nevada) at No. 5.

Below is the final HSFA 300.
