The 2020 Alabama high school football is off-and-rolling after a lot of debate on when the season should start during the coronavirus pandemic. 23 games were played Thursday night with two 2019 state finalists taking the field.

2019 Class 6A runner-up Spanish Fort lost to Fairhope 45-34. Duke-commit Riley Leonards had an outstanding evening with two touchdowns passes, two touchdown runs and he also caught a touchdown pass.

2019 Class 1A runner-up Mars Hill Bible, which won the title in 2018, was beaten by Jasper 30-20.

The 15th annual Alabama High School Athletic Association Kickoff Classic is being at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery this week. Pike Road opened the Classic by rolling by Montgomery Catholic 63-34. The two teams combined for 986 yards in total offense. Pike Road quarterback Iverson Hooks ran for 114 yards and two scores. He also completed 16-of-25 passes for 296 yards with three TDs.

On Friday, in the second game of the AHSAA Kickoff Classic, Wetumpka will play Prattville in the 58th renewal of its rivalry. Prattville enters the game ranked No. 8 in the Preseason High School Football America Alabama Top 10.

Spain Park rolled to a 52-21 win over Huntsville with junior quarterback Bennett Meredith throwing for 370 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Jaylen Ward caught six balls for 172 yards and a score.
