Central (Phenix City) and Montgomery Catholic won the first official Alabama High School Athletic Association girls’ flag championships Wednesday at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.
In the 6A/7A championship game, Central beat Spain Park 55-7. The win capped a perfect 19-0 season for the Red Devils, giving the program a 37-game overall win streak. The team entered the game ranked No. 1 in the USA Today national high school flag football rankings. Spain Park entered the game ranked No. 19 in the nation.
Senior quarterback Gerritt Griggs led the Red Devils up and down the field quickly completing 9-of-13 passes for 166 yards in the first half to take a 34-7 lead into intermission.
Griggs, who was chosen the Class 6A/7A championship game MVP, finished the contest 14-of-19 for 253 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for 38 yards on four carries for 291 total yards. She had touchdown completions of 41 yards to Colby Cook, 3 yards to Allyson Supan, 17 yards to Mariah Harrison, and 19 yards to Savannah Sevier, all in the first half. Griggs also ran for a 7 yard-TD and connected on three successful extra-point plays.
In the 1A/5A championship, Montgomery Catholic (17-4) beat Moody (17-3) 14-7.
