Another week of big changes in the HSFA 100 high school football national rankings

Evidently, the Top 25 isn’t for everyone. For the third straight week, four teams in the coveted Top  25 were beaten, which causes a big shake-up in the entire High School Football America 100 powered by NFL Play Football.

The top seven teams won last weekend, but No. 8 St. Joseph’s Prep’s (Pennsylvania) surprising home loss to Georgia’s Milton High School shakes-up this week’s rankings that are created with HSFA’s proprietary algorithm.

The three-time defending Pennsylvania 6A champs tumble 41 spots to No. 49 this week. Meanwhile, Milton, which should be in the hunt for a Georgia 7A state title, climbs to No. 47 after a 3-1 start.

The shock of the week goes to St. Francis of Mountain View, California. The Lancers scored with sixteen seconds to go in the game, handing former No. 18 De La Salle its first loss against a Northern California opponent in 30 years. Yes, that’s not a misprint, DLS’s last loss against a team from NoCal came 318 games ago.

The streak against North California opponents began in 1992 after the Spartans lost their final game in 1991. That ’91 game was a loss to Pittsburg in the North Coast Section championship game.

During the 318 game streak, De La Salle was 316-0-2. The two ties were against Clayton Valley Charter and Palma in 2004, which came after the Spartans’ national record 151-game win streak ended on September 5, 2004 against Bellevue (Washington). That streak covered a 12-year period.

As far as this week’s rankings, DLS drops to No. 63. St. Francis bolts into the Top 100 at No. 61, which is the highest ranking ever for the Lancers.

North Shore, which has won two of the last three state championships in the biggest classification in Texas, lost to Westfield 28-21, dropping the Mustangs from No. 13 to No. 77. Westfield soars 100 spots from No. 172 to No. 72.

Former No. 23 Pickerington Central also feels a free-fall after losing in overtime to unranked and arch-rival Pickerington North 13-10. The Tigers are down to No. 91 this week.

Inside the Top 25, Bishop Gorman (Nevada) continues its climb from a preseason ranking of No. 89. The Gaels check-in at No. 12 this week, up eight spots, after its third straight win over a nationally-ranked opponent.

Bishop Gorman, who plays No. 46 Hamilton (Arizona), has already beaten No. 29 Miami Central (Florida), No. 125 Lone Peak (Utah) and No. 136 Saint Louis (Hawaii).

The Gorman/Hamilton game is one of eleven head-to-head HSFA 100 matchups coming up this weekend.

  • No. 5 St. John Bosco (California) at No. 92 Oscar Smith (Virginia)
  • No. 7 Gonzaga (Washington, DC) at No. 49 St. Joseph’s Prep (Pennsylvania)
  • No. 12 Bishop Gorman (Nevada) at No. 46 Hamilton (Arizona)
