The Packers have announced that Brandon Wiese of Belmont High School in Belmont, Wisconsin, has been named the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week.

Wiese, in his fifth year as the coach of the Braves, is getting ready to kick off their season against St. Mary Catholic High School in Neenah, Wis., on Friday, Sept. 25. Last year, to adjust to fewer football participants, Belmont transitioned from 11-player to 8-player football and had an impressive first season. The team will look to improve on 2019, during which they went 7-2 in the regular season and advanced to the semifinals of the WIAA 8-Player Playoff Tournament.

As the fall high school football season begins, COVID-19 has created challenges across all conferences and levels of football.

“I think just the unknown is challenging,” said Wiese. “We have a great group of guys and we came off a great offseason, which we expected, with three- and four-year varsity starters returning. But just being able to balance all of the changes and being able to adapt, which our kids and our parents are doing a nice job of, is hard within itself, just being able to accept some of those changes, especially when they come last minute.”

Even with all the complications that COVID-19 has caused, Wiese and the Braves remained focused on the task at hand.

“For St. Mary’s, their coach does a real nice job of bringing pressure on defense, and offensively he’s pretty creative,” said Wiese. “We definitely need to make sure that we’re paying attention to detail and staying disciplined against those guys.”

Wiese grew up in Fennimore, Wis., where he graduated from Fennimore High School in 2007. Throughout high school, he participated in football, basketball, golf and baseball. Wiese played quarterback and safety under head coach Dave Rosemeyer. Following high school, Wiese went on to receive his undergraduate degree in 2011 and his master’s degree in 2014 from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Wiese’s coaching career began during his undergraduate studies in 2008, as an assistant football coach at Belmont. He went on to take a role as an assistant coach for Potosi High School in 2014, before returning to Belmont in 2015. In 2016, Wiese was named head coach of the Braves.

Wiese is honored to be named the Packers Coach of the Week but considers it to be a staff award.

“We’ve had the same coaching staff since I have taken over as head coach. From creating a junior high program to our assistant coaches at high school, we’re all the same and have been the same since the beginning. I can take some credit but certainly they have done a lot of work to be a part of this success.”

Wiese and his staff oversee a program of 30 players. His assistant staff includes Mitch Austin, Matt McKinley, Troy Updike, Tyler Ames and Jacob Wedig.

In addition to coaching football, Wiese is also a school counselor for the middle/high school of the Belmont School District. Wiese and his wife, Brooke, have two sons, Beckett and Baylor.

About the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week Program:

The Green Bay Packers Coach of the Week program supports football outreach efforts by giving high school coaches the recognition they deserve. Nominations can be submitted by 10 a.m. every Monday to Ryan Fencl, Packers football outreach specialist, at [email protected]. All nominations should include the nominee’s name, address, school, phone number and reason he/she is deserving of the award. This year, because some schools have postponed their football seasons to the spring due to COVID-19, the Packers are seeking coaches to be nominated regardless of their teams’ on-field performance or whether they are playing in the fall or spring. Rather, the nominee could be honored for how they have turned programs around, how the team has impacted the community, or how the coach impacts the players and their families.
