After more than a decade of battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), former Greenville High School head football coach Jeremy Williams has passed away. Williams died Sunday morning at the age of 50.
Williams, who was named the National High School Coaches Association‘s National Football Coach of the Year for the 2009-10 sports season, was the head coach at Greenville for nine seasons. In 2008, he was diagnosed with ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Despite being weakened by the disease, Williams led Greenville to a perfect 10-0 regular season in 2009. That squad finished 11-1, losing in the second round of the Georgia high school football playoffs.
The magical 2009 season was chronicled in a documentary called Season of a Lifetime.
Williams story stepped into the national spotlight in 2010 when ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover built a home for him and his family in Pine Mountain, Georgia.
Williams retired from coaching before the start of the 2011 season.
Sad to hear Coach Jeremy Williams died today. No more pain for this immensely inspiring, Godly man who fought ALS for more than a decade. Our loss is Heaven’s gain.
