Over Friday, California’s most powerful high school football section, the CIF-Southern Section, released its new divisional lineups for the 2019 season. However, unlike the past couple of years, this year’s announcement had some BIG news.

Officials decided shrink Division 1 from 16 to 8 teams, which, in effect, is similar to the Open Division used in boys and girls basketball. The 8-team division will be selected by a football advisory committee that will choose the best teams from Division 1/2 at the end of the season.

Once the top eight football teams are selected for the Division 1 football playoffs, the remaining teams from Division 1/ 2 will form the Division 2 playoffs.
“Understand that competitive-equity playoffs are not about filling brackets with teams who do not belong, which is what we have seen in the Division 1 playoffs recently, resulting in non-competitive games and lopsided scores,” said CIF-SS commissioner Rob Wigod in a news release. “In this new format, the Division 1 bracket will contain only those teams whose power rankings justify their placement into that division using the most accurate information we have available to do so.”
Since there are fewer teams in Division 1/2, the CIF-SS expanded the total number of Divisions from 13 to 14. The CIF-SS places teams into divisions each year based on a competitive-equity formula based on how teams performed the two previous years.
