To say it’s been a wild couple of weeks in the High School Football America Top 100 would be an understatement. Aside from the fact that there were supposed to be 37 games between Top 100 teams in the last two weeks, hurricanes Harvey and Irma have really impacted communities and families, plus our proprietary algorithm that is used to create the national rankings.
It’s important to point-out that our thoughts and prayers are with those that are dealing with Irma now and those that are still recovering from Harvey. Our rankings are secondary to the devastation that has taken place over the last week weeks.
Both hurricanes led the cancellation of Top 100 match-ups, which impacts a team’s strength of schedule. An excellent example of this would be Katy (Texas), which continues to fall in the latest rankings, because A) the Tigers haven’t played yet and B) both of their cancelled games were against teams that are ranked in the Top 100 – Westlake (Texas) and Klein Collins (Texas). The Tigers, who began the season ranked No. 19 in the nation, dropped four spots this week to No. 26. This week, Katy will open against No. 60 The Woodlands (Texas).
Again, high school football games are minor compared to what communities are dealing with, but I know their are some that are going to want to understand the impact of the cancellations on our algorithm.
Teams in New Jersey and Pennsylvania had a major impact on this week’s rankings.
Former No. 6 St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, New Jersey) lost to St. John’s in Washington D.C. The Cadets, who last week lost a heartbreaker to No. 11 De La Salle (California), jump from No. 30 to No. 16 this week. St. Joe’s drops to No. 31 this week.
SJC was hoping to improve that ranking this weekend against No. 2 IMG Academy (Florida), however, that game has been cancelled due to Hurricane Irma.
Defending Pennsylvania Class 6A champ St. Joseph’s Prep beat former No. 9 St. Peter’s Prep (New Jersey) 28-21, which brings the Hawks into the Top 25 at No. 18. The Hawks entered the game ranked No. 43 in the nation. St. Peter’s drops to No. 27.
Former No. 13 Bergen Catholic (New Jersey) lost to former No. 60 Archbishop Wood (Pennsylvania) 28-21 and former No. 26 Paramus Catholic (New Jersey) lost to former No. 89 DePaul Catholic (New Jersey), which has caused a logjam from No. 34 through No. 37 between the four teams. The four are separated by seven one-thousandths of a percentage point.
Why?
In Week 1, Bergen Catholic beat DePaul, while Paramus Catholic beat Archbishop Wood. Add-in this week’s results and you’ll see why these four are so close.
After beating New Jersey foes over the weekend, No. 18 St. Joseph’s Prep and No. 36 Archbishop Wood will turn their focus on each other as they will battle against each other this week.
The St. Joe’s/Wood game will be one of seven Top 100 match-ups this week — Bergen Catholic will travel to Southern California to face No. 1 Mater Dei (California), No. 10 South Pointe (South Carolina) will face No. 67 Buford (Georgia); No. 11 De La Salle will try to hand No. 15 Bishop Gorman its third loss in-a-row when the Gaels host the Spartans; SoCal powers No. 32 Mission Viejo and No. 41 Long Beach Poly will play each other Friday night along with the aforementioned No. 26 Katy against No. 60 The Woodlands in Texas.
There are eight new teams in the rankings this week — Lawrence Central (Indiana) at No. 68, Trotwood-Madison (Ohio) at No. 74, Pearl (Mississippi) at No. 82, St. Xavier (Kentucky) at No. 91, Mansfield (Texas) at No. 92, Montgomery Bell Academy (Tennessee) at No. 93, Lincoln-Way East (Illinois) at No. 96 and Harrisburg (Pennsylvania) at No. 99.
