After a convincing 42-7 rout of No. 92 Corner Canyon (Utah), Bishop Gorman will try to put itself into the national championship chase. Friday, the No. 1 ranked Gaels will host defending national champ Mater Dei (California).

BG started the season ranked No. 13 in the High School Football America 100, powered by NFL Play Football. Mater Dei is No. 1.

The matchup will be the third between the two national powers. Mater Dei has won both matchups — 42-0 in 2018 and 35-21 in 2017. The ’17 win snapped the Gaels’ 55-game win streak

Since 2016, Bishop Gorman and Mater Dei have won four national titles. Gorman won the 2016 crown, while the Monarchs have won three titles (2017, 2018, 2021) in the last five years.

No. 2 Liberty will also have an out-of-state opponent when it faces defending Utah 6A champ Lone Peak, ranked No. 3 in the Utah Top 10.

Last weekend, Preseason Top 10’s Bishop Manogue, Desert Pines and McQueen lost to out-of-state opponents.

  • Former No. 5 Bishop Manogue lost to Bingham (Utah) 48-9
  • Former No. 6 McQueen lost to Grant (Sacramento, California) 42-0
