65 teams and 1,500 student-athletes from across Western New York made their way to the Buffalo Bills Training Center to take part in the NFL team’s annual High School Girls Flag Football Season Kickoff event. It included the opportunity for teams to participate in preseason scrimmages and take photos for their social media pages and school websites.

“The kids, they love coming to the stadium or the field house,” Sweet Home High School head coach Chris Monaco said. “The purpose, really is, this is before our season starts. Most of us don’t start our real games till the following week, so it’s a good chance just to get reps. And, you know, get all our kids on the field.”

When the Bills began supporting girls’ flag, the number of schools that participated was 20 schools with 400 student-athletes. Heading into their fourth season, the Bills have contributed $185,000 to the sport. This is part of the over $500,000 that the Bills have committed to Flag Football over the next three years.

“The dollars to help get it started was huge,” Monaco said. “But it didn’t stop there. As we continue to go through and grow the program through the years… The opportunities that keep coming from the Bills have not stopped over the year. They’ve really continued to offer the girls opportunities and support them.”

“Nothing happens very quickly. It takes planning. It takes budgeting,” Monaco said. “It really just exploded. These girls are growing up loving the game, and now they get a chance to play the game. So it continues to expand. There’s over 200 [teams] in the state right now.”

In 2023, New York State sanctioned High School Girls Flag Football. 2024 was the first ever NYSPHSAA State Championship season for Girls High School Varsity Flag Football

Currently, 14 states have sanctioned girls’ high school flag football as a varsity sport.
