After overcoming a 14-point fourth quarter deficit, Canisius beat Cardinal Hayes 25-24 with a two-point conversion on the final play of the game to capture the 2019 New York State Catholic Athletic Association state championship.

Hayes, which entered the game ranked No. 2 in our New York Top 10 statewide rankings, led 24-10 with under ten minutes to go in the fourth quarter. That’s when sophomore quarterback Tyler Baker led the Crusaders on two touchdown drives.

Baker’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Nik McMillan with no time remaining made the scored 24-23 in favor of Cardinal Hayes and a big decision…go for one and overtime or go for two and the wins. Cansius went for the win and captured its third overall state championship when CJ Ozolins converted the two-point conversion.

Canisius, which will climb from its No. 10 statewide ranking, finishes the season with a 7-5 record. Hayes is 7-5 with its annual Thanksgiving Day game Mount Saint Michael still to be played.
