CIF Southern Section updates playoff divisions

CIF Southern Section

The CIF Southern Section has updated its 13 divisions for the 2017 high school football season.  This will be the second year that the state’s most powerful football section is placing teams in divisions based on a power-points ranking system that looks at a team’s success over the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Once again, Division 1 will feature some of the top teams in the country like defending 2016 Open Division state champ St. John Bosco and fellow Trinity League member Mater along with Corona Centennial. All six of the Trinity League schools are in Division 1.

Moving-up from Division 2 to Division 1 are defending CIF Division 1-A champ San Clemente and Murrieta Valley.  Dropping-down from Division 1 to Division 2 are Tesoro and Upland.

St. John Bosco is the top ranked team in Division 1 with 530 ranking points, followed by Mater Dei with 518.05 points.  Last year, Mater Dei snapped Bosco’s run of four straight Trinity League titles with a 26-21 come-from-behind win in their regular season match-up, but the Braves won the rematch, beating the Monarchs in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game 42-28.

With 18 teams in the division, only two teams will not qualify for the playoffs.
