It’s a very exciting time for me as we are now into the marketing phase of my upcoming book High School Football in Texas – Amazing Football Stories From the Greatest Players of Texas. You can pre-order the book that features interviews with over 25 past and present NFL players, nine of whom are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, talking about their favorite Texas high school football memories.
Former Katy Tiger quarterback Andy Dalton is featured on the cover of the book that is being published by Skyhorse Publishing out of New York City.
The question I get the most is: what was the hardest parts of writing the book? Actually, it had nothing to do with the actual writing of the book, instead, it was trying to find a high resolution photo capable of being used on the cover. Remember, many of the players that I interviewed weren’t playing high school football during the digital age. Thanks to the hard work of Katy head coach Gary Joseph and his assistant Sandy Carp, we were able to use the photo you see above.
Who’s in the book?
Let’s start with the Pro Football Hall of Famers I interviewed — Raymond Berry (Paris HS), Earl Campbell (John Tyler HS), Eric Dickerson (Sealy HS), “Mean Joe” Greene (Temple Dunbar HS), Ken Houston (Lufkin Dunbar HS), Bob Lilly (Throckmorton HS), Don Maynard (Colorado HS), Mike Singletary (Worthing HS) and LaDainian Tomlinson (Waco University HS). Then there’s a couple of future Hall of Famers — Drew Brees (Westlake HS) and Adrian Peterson (Palestine HS). College Football Hall of Fame lineman Jerry Sisemore is also in the book, along with College Football Hall of Fame coach Gene Stallings (Paris HS).
Other players with feature chapters — Bill Bradley (Palestine HS), Dalton, Derwin Gray (Judson HS), Craig James (Stratford HS), Andrew Luck (Stratford HS), Lovie Smith (Big Sandy HS) and Elmo Wright (Sweeny Carver HS/Sweeny HS).
2017 Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 NFL draft pick Baker Mayfield (Lake Travis HS) was interviewed for my chapter on the ten Heisman Trophy winners from the Lone Star State.
Then there are Lone Star State legends like Todd Dodge (Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson HS), Johnathan Gray (Aledo HS), Kenneth Hall (Sugar Land) and Alan Lowry (Irving HS).
In all, I conducted interviews with over 60 players, coaches and fans to tell the story of Texas high school football through the eyes of some of the state’s greatest players.
You can pre-order the book that will be published September 4 at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and wherever books are sold.
