Former NFL tight end Matt Schobel is celebrating a Texas high school football championship at his alma mater, Columbus. Thursday, Schobel, who’s been the school’s head coach since 2019, led the Cardinals to the school’s first-ever state football championship with a 48-14 win over defending champ Malakoff in the Class 3A Division I state title game at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Making the championship even sweeter is his son, Adam, was named the game’s MVP and his nephew, John, was the game’s defensive MVP.

Adam Schobel competed 15-of-21 passes for 261-yards with two touchdowns. He also ran for a score. He has signed with TCU, which is his father’s college alma mater.

John Schobel led the team with ten total tackles with three sacks.

The loss snapped Malakoff’s 31-game win streak.

Both teams finish the season with 15-1 records.
