Deadly Maui wildfires result in Week 1 Hawaii high school football game cancellations

With safety being the No. 1 priority on Maui, all opening weekend high school football games have been cancelled. The deadly fires have killed more than 30 people, as of Thursday morning.

Baldwin’s Saturday game against nationally-ranked Edison of Huntington Beach, California has been cancelled. Because of the emergency on the island, the Chargers, who are ranked No. 113 in the High School Football America 300 preseason national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football, have cancelled their 9-day, two game trip.

Edison was also scheduled to play Lahainaluna, ranked No. 9 in the HSFA Hawaii Top 10 preseason statewide rankings. Lahainaluna’s opener against Hilo has also been cancelled.

Hawaiinewsnow.com is reporting that many Lahainaluna coaches’ homes have been damaged by the devastating fires.

  • Edison at Baldwin
  • Honoka’a at King Kekaulike
  • Kamehameha-Maui at Castle
  • Lahainaluna at Hilo
  • Maui at Nanakuli
