Growing-up in eastern Pennsylvania, I always thought that one of the coolest school nicknames was the Galloping Ghosts of Abington High School. Last night, as I was wrapping-up our Friday night coverage, it dawned on me that I should research if any other football teams have a Halloween twist.
Below, you can see two of the older versions of Abington’s helmets courtesy of our good from @END2008. The helmet above is the Ghosts’ current one with just numbers on the side.
The short answer is YES! So here’s my treat for today, no tricks!
In addition to Abington High, there’s one other high school football team that carries the moniker the Galloping Ghosts. It’s Kaukauna High in Wisconsin. Kaukauna are currently floating around in our Wisconsin Top 10 at No. 7.
From New Jersey, I introduce you to the Eastside Ghosts from Paterson. The reason for their nickname is the school is built on an 1800’s graveyard.
And, speaking of graveyards, the Phantoms of Cathedral High School in Los Angeles actually play on an old graveyard. The field sits on-top of the Old Calvary Cemetery, whose original inhabitants were moved years ago.
And, it you think I’m trying to trick you, just check-out the picture below. That’s one of the original tombstones.

Now, back to the ghosts. Some schools have colorful specters.
In Illinois, Illinois Valley Central is known as the Grey Ghosts, while Alexandria Central High is home to the Purple Ghosts.
What’s Halloween without some witches?
No surprise on our first school carrying the witches nickname. It’s Salem High in Massachusetts. You may have heard something about witch trials in the town in 1692.
In addition to Salem, Brewer High in Maine and Greenwich High School in New York are known as the Witches.

In Arkansas, Harrison High is known as the Goblins. Check-out their logo.
On to some Demons!
Former NFL QB turned CBS NFL analyst Tony Romo was a high school demon at Burlington High School in Wisconsin.
There are approximately 30 high school football programs known as the Demons. A few schools have the nickname Blue Demons and in North Carolina you’ll find the Fike High Golden Demons

Finally, we wrap-up with the most popular Halloween nickname — the Devils! Actually, plain old “Devils” isn’t the most popular. Blue Devils and Red Devils are used by hundreds of high school football teams.
On the color spectrum there are also Green Devils, Greene Devils, Maroon Devils and Purple Devils.
If I missed any Halloween nicknames, please let me know, so I can add your favorite.
