The top ten teams from the preseason California Top 25 hold their spots in the first in-season ranking, powered by NFL Play Football. And, there are three new teams this week in the statewide rankings created with our proprietary algorithm.

No. 1 Mater Dei and No. 2 St. John Bosco picked-up quality wins against nationally-ranked teams to open the weekend. MD doubled-up No. 3 Corona Centennial 28-14. SJB beat Nevada’s Liberty 42-22. Corona Centennial is currently No. 22 in our national rankings, while Liberty is No. 169.

This weekend, all eyes will be on South Florida for the nationally-televised showdown between St. John Bosco and four-time defending state champ St. Thomas Aquinas. Like the state rankings, Bosco is No. 2 nationally, while STA is No. 6.

After the Liberty win, SJB is on a 15-game win streak against out-of-state opponents. St. Thomas Aquinas was the last team to beat Bosco in 2017.

Mater Dei will also be on the road. The Monarchs will be in Utah to play Bingham, ranked No. 221 in the HSFA 300.

Oaks Christian soars into the Top 25 at No. 17 after routing preseason No. 13 Chaminade 55-28. This week, the Lions will host No. 7 Sierra Canyon.

Also new to the rankings this week are Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) at No. 23 and Helix at No. 24.

Aside from Sierra Canyon and Oaks Christian, there are three other CA Top 25 head-to-head matchups:

  • No. 3 Corona Centennial at No. 13 Santa Margarita
  • No. 6 Orange Lutheran at No. 12 De La Salle
  • No. 10 Folsom at No. 8 Serra (San Mateo)
