Robert F. Munroe Day School (Quincy, Florida) has hired former NFL tight end Michael Gaines as the school’s new head high school football coach. The school made the announcement via its Twitter account.

Gaines was a 7th round pick by the Carolina Panthers in the 2004 NFL Draft. During his six seasons in the NFL, he also played for the Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, and Cleveland Browns. He caught 84 balls during his career for 869 yards and six touchdowns.

During his high school days, Gaines played at Florida High School in Tallahassee where he was named All-State in Class 1A during his junior and senior years. By his senior season, Gaines was the top-ranked tight end in the state. He finished his scholastic career with 56 catches for 1,715 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Gaines replaces Russell Ellington, who left the school after one season as its head coach. Ellington led Munroe to a 6-7 record, advancing to the Class 1S state semifinals.
