A controversial call like the one that occurred in last year’s Georgia 3A high school football championship game hopefully won’t happen again. The Georgia High Schoo Association has voted unanimously to use instant replay for the state’s high school football championship games, beginning with the 2023 games that will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons.

The reason instant replay became front-and-center in Georgia is because of a blown call in the 2022 3A championship game between Sandy Creek and nationally-ranked Cedar Grove.

Sandy Creek won 21-17 on a late touchdown that replays on Georgia Public Broadcasting showed wasn’t a touchdown.

Social media accentuated the missed call, which led to the GHSA examining the use of replay.

In 2019, Alabama became the first state to use instant replay in high school football games. Since then, over a dozen states have added instant replay, mostly in state championship games.
