While the Georgia high school football championships are a month-and-a-half away, this is championship weekend across the state with lots of teams playing for regional championships.
No. 1 Milton will square-off for the 5A Region 7 title when it plays No. 13 Roswell, coming off a 48-45 win over Gainesville last Friday. After winning the 7A state championship this season, Milton is playing in Class 5A this year. The Georgia High School Association eliminated Class 7A after last season,.
How good is 5A this year? Friday night, reigning 6A champ Thomas County Central, No. 12 in the state, will host 2023 5A champ Coffee, No. 9 in the High School Football America Georgia Top 25 statewide high school football rankings created with our proprietary algorithm. While the Coffee/TCC is a big game, both have lost to No. 7 Lee County, which sits atop the 5A Region 2 standings with a perfect 4-0 mark. The Trojans can clinch the regional title with a win over No. 24 Houston County this week.
If Houston County pulls an upset, then Lee County will share the title with the Coffee/Thomas County Central winner.
In 6A, the state’s largest classification, No. 2 Carrollton will square-off with No. 11 Douglas County for the Region 2 championship
The 6A Region 8 title will be on the line Friday night when No. 3 Buford travels to No. 6 Mill Creek.
In the southern part of the state, No. 17 Lowndes, No. 18 Colquitt County and No. 20 Valdosta are tied atop the Region 1 standings with 3-1 records in the ultra-competitive region.
Lowndes plays No. 20 Valdosta in the 63rd renewal of the Winnersville Classic. Valdosta has won the last two in this grudge match, which gives the Wildcats a 39-23 lead in the all-time series.
Colquitt County will host No. 19 Richmond Hill.
Just a reminder that this was supposed to be the final week of the regular season, but the Georgia High School Association extended the season by a week, because of Hurricane Helene.
