Mater Dei (California) is one win away from back-to-back High School Football America national championships. Last Friday, the Monarchs beat arch-rival St. John Bosco (California), ranked No. 5 in the HSFA 300, 31-24 for the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship.

MD can wrap-up its fifth overall HSFA national crown, powered by NFL Play Football, since 2017 in two weeks when it plays No. 26 De La Salle for California’s Open Division high school football championship.

Since the Open Division championship began in 2016, Mater Dei is a perfect 4-0 in the title game. DLS won the first one in ’16, but has lost four since that game.

Milton (Georgia) moves up a notch to No. 2 this week in the national rankings created with our proprietary algorithm. This week, the Eagles will play No. 35 Lee County in the Georgia Class 5A state semifinals. The winner moves on to play the winner of the other semifinal between No. 61 Coffee and No. 72 Langston Hughes.

At the start of the postseason, Georgia’s Class 5A was loaded with three reigning state champs – Milton (7A), Thomas County Central (6A) and Coffee (5A). After Georgia eliminated 7A at the end of last season, Milton dropped to 5A. Thomas County Central dropped one class, while Coffee moved up one to 5A.

This season, Milton (13-0) has beaten No. 19 Buford, No. 25 American Heritage (Plantation, Florida), No. 94 Roswell, No. 179 Blessed Trinity, No. 201 Houston County and No. 237 Gainesville.

Bishop Gorman (Nevada) moves from No. 2 to No. 3 in the latest rankings. The Gaels won their 14th Nevada state championship in the last 15 years last Tuesday. BG crushed No. 109 Arbor View 69-7.

Duncanville (Texas) remains No. 4 in the HSFA 300. The Panthers, who have won two straight 6A Division I state championships, play No. 222 Bridgeland Saturday in the state quarterfinals.

The other three quarterfinal 6A Division I games are also head-to-head matchups inside the HSFA 300:

  • No. 6 North Shore1 vs. No. 18 Atascocita
  • No. 16 North Crowley vs. No. 53 Allen
  • No. 40 Westlake vs. No. 58 Lake Travis

New Jersey’s Bergen Catholic moves up a spot to No. 7 after winning its fourth straight Non-Public A state championship.

Newly-crowned Illinois 6A champ East St. Louis moves up five spots to No. 20 this week. The Flyers only loss this year was to No. 11 IMG Academy (Florida) by one point in overtime.
