The 2022 high school football season in America is officially underway with the opening of fall camps across the islands. Hawaii is the first state in the nation to start fall practice.

The regular season starts on Friday, August 5 with eight games, followed with nine contests on Saturday.

One of the biggest changes this year is the three-year alliance between the Oahu Interscholastic Association (OIA) and Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) is over with each league having their own 2022 schedules.

In the ILH Open Division, Kamehameha, Punahou and St. Louis will field two varsity teams each that will result in them playing each other three times.

In all, Hawaii enters 2022 with fifty 11-man teams and three 8-man programs.

Once again in 2022, Hawaii’s top teams will test themselves against national powers from the mainland.

Reigning Open Division champ Kahuku, with a brand new turf field, has two marquee matchups. The Red Raiders will play national power St. John Bosco (California) in Southern California on September 17. On September 30, Kahuku will host St. Frances Academy (Maryland).

Last year, Bosco finished No. 8 in the High School Football America 100 national rankings powered by NFL Play Football. St. Frances checked-in at No. 12 in the nation in 2021.

Mililani also has two out-of-state games. The Trojans will host Mission Viejo (California) on August 12 and then travel to Southern California for a September 16 matchup against defending national champ Mater Dei.
