For the second week in a row, defending national champ Mater Dei is enjoying Saturday after beating a Top 25 team on the road Friday night.

The Monarchs, ranked No. 1 in the High School Football America 300, powered by NFL Play Football, beat No. 17 Corona Centennial 43-20. The wins comes on the heels of the team’s 24-21 come-from-behind win over No. 13 Bishop Gorman a week ago.

Junior quarterback Elijah Brown, who has never lost a game (20-0) as a starting varsity quarterback, tossed three touchdown passes. All of them went to Marcus Brown.

No. 3 Buford is a perfect 3-0 in its move up to Class 7A in Georgia. The Wolves beat No. 20 North Cobb Friday night 21-14.

Alabama-recruit Justice Haynes scored all three touchdown for Buford. The game-winner came with under a minute to play.

It’s hard for an East Coast team to win in the Pacific Time Zone, but No. 5 Bergen Catholic (New Jersey) showed it could be done with a solid 28-7 defeat of No. 21 Saguaro in Scottsdale, Arizona. Both teams won state titles in their respective states last year.

BC has opened 2022 with back-to-back wins over two state champs. Last week, the Crusaders beat North Carolina 4A champ Cardinal Gibbons. They are now on a 15-game win streak.

No. 12 Good Counsel (Maryland) is another Top 25 that picked-up a big road win Friday night. The Falcons beat No. 40 Catholic (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) 38-35. Ryan Capriotti nailed a game-winning field goal at the end of the game.
