No. 4 Weddington edged No. 6 Charlotte Catholic Friday night 7-3 in a battle of North Carolina state champs. The Warriors, who have won the last two Class 3AA championships, used a rock-solid defense to edge the three-time defending 3A champs.
It was the second year in a row, that Weddington has beaten CC. Last year, the Warriors won 45-0, which 66 game conference winning streak for the Cougars.
Weddington was without Will Shipley, who would have been the top player in the state if the season had been played as scheduled in the fall. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Shipley is now enrolled at Clemson.
