The race for the 2023 High School Football America national championship chase is on.
With many of the Top 25 teams opening with nationally-ranked opponents, fans can now begin the conversation about which teams should be in the championship conversation.
Saturday Games
Two-time reigning Ohio Division I champ St. Edward got off to a solid start with a 27-10 win over three-time defending Indiana 6A champ Center Grove. The Eagles defense was outstanding, allowing its only touchdown with :20 seconds to play in the game.
Friday Games
Mater Dei (California), the preseason No. 1 in the High School Football America 300 national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football, opened with a 28-14 win over No. 22 Corona Centennial (California). Monarch quarterback Elijah Brown is now 30-1 as a starter.
Defending national champ St. John Bosco, No. 2 in our preseason rankings, opened with a 42-22 win over No. 177 Liberty (Nevada). The Braves have now won 16 straight against out-of-state opponents. Their last loss was to St. Thomas Aquinas (Florida) in 2017. Those two will play next week in a game televised on ESPN.
No. 7 Buford (Georgia) may have made the biggest statement with an 18-0 shutout of No. 3 St. Frances Academy (Maryland).
No. 4 Bishop Gorman (Nevada) outscored No. 74 Corner Canyon (Utah) 42-14 after trailing the Chargers 28-21 at the half. Gael running backs Micah Kaapana, a Michigan-recruit, and De Von Rice, a Hawaii-recruit, each ran for three scores.
Like Buford, IMG Academy (Florida) opened with an impressive win. The No. 5 Ascenders beat two-time reigning Tennessee state champ Lipscomb Academy 35-10. LA entered the game ranked No. 23 in the HSFA 300.
In Ohio, in a battle between two of the winningest high school football programs, No. 32 Massillon Washington (Ohio) beat No. 176 Valdosta (Georgia) 28-17. The win is the 933rd for the Tigers, who are fourth on the all-time wins list. Valdosta is No. 1 in all-time wins with 941.
