Friday night’s quarterfinal round in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 playoffs in Southern California featured four games with every matchup being a battle between teams in the High School Football America 100, powered by NFL Play Football.

Two of the four favorites, according to our proprietary algorithm, saw their 2022 seasons come to a close.

No. 39 Mission Viejo surprised many with its 31-28 defeat of No. 14 Corona Centennial. The Huskies had the ball with under three minutes to play, but cornerback Trey Tolmaire incepted a pass near midfield that ended CC’s hope of a tying or go ahead score.

Next-up for MV is No. 5 St. John Bosco in next week’s divisional semifinals. The Braves beat No. 86 Orange Lutheran Friday night 49-14.

The SJB/MV will feature to head coaches who know each other very well. Mission Viejo head coach Chad Johnson spent many years as a top assistant under Bosco head coach Jason Negro.

On the other side of the bracket, reigning High School Football America national champ Mater Dei advanced to the semis with an easy 54-14 win over No. 94 JSerra. The No. 1 Monarchs will face No. 64 Los Alamitos.

Mater Dei’s win came one day after legendary head coach Bruce Rollinson announced that 2022 would be his final season at the helm of the three-time HSFA national champs.

Los Al advanced to the Final Four with a 52-42 win over No. 38 Long Beach Poly.

In Ohio, we’re heading to the regional championships, AKA the state quarterfinals.

In Division I, No. 37 Lakota West picked-up a quality win Friday night with a 30-10 victory over No. 81 Elder. Next week, the Firebirds will play No. 24 Archbishop Moeller for the Region 4 title.

The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship is set. It will be a Maryland vs. DC final with No. 21 DeMatha playing No. 57 St. John’s College HS.

SJC beat No. 27 Good Counsel 14-10 Friday night. The win reversed a regular season loss to GC.

In the Hoosier State, next weekend’s 6A semifinals will be a matchup of defending 2021 state champs with No. 75 Cathedral (’20 & ’21 5A champ) facing No. 80 Center Grove (’20 & ’21 6A champs).

Friday night, Cathedral avenged a regular season loss to No. 73 Brownsburg. The Fighting Irish beat the Bulldogs 14-7. Center Grove beat No. 254 Warren Central 42-32.

In North Carolina, Chambers won’t be playing for a fifth straight state championship. A.C. Reynolds beat the No. 93 ranked Cougars 17-16. Jarod Glenn’s 41-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winner.

Also in NC’s 4A second round, No. 79 Hough beat No. 99 Mallard Creek 16-6.
