2014 Lubbock Westerners locker room

2014 Lubbock Westerners in locker room before Wednesday practice.

Back to work for the teachers/coaches/administrators in LISD. Yes, we have been working, but Wednesday was the official start up day for everyone in the district. The day was littered with meetings, agendas and discussion. All of that before we even set foot on the field. This time of the year the days get long and your sleeping pattern suffers. But it’s what we do. So you just need to embrace it!

By the time we hit the field at 7:00 p.m. the staff had already logged a full day of school work. Once we got over to Chapman, our videographer/photographer, Abby Reed, shot footage for our entrance video. This video will be played every time we take the field at PlainsCapital Park. It was fun to see the kids interact with Abby. She has fit in with the staff just like one of the coaches would. Watching this video come together has been fun. The kids deserve to have some fun with this. They work hard so it is nice to be able to see them enjoy this aspect of the game.

Practice was smooth yesterday. We went for ninety minutes. Monday and Tuesday were tough, physical practices. Wednesday was more of a thud contact with full speed tempo. Right now, our goal is to have them fresh for the scrimmage on Friday against Coronado. I am anxiously awaiting the scrimmage. But I’m not sure if I want it to get here fast so it’s over quicker or if I am just ready to see another team. Scrimmages drive me nuts. It’s like a tease. You can’t get wrapped up in it because it doesn’t matter for another few weeks. There are all kinds of pitfalls as a head coach. It’s always a delicate balance.

I just want to see some physical play on Friday. I want to see how far we have come on a physicality basis. That’s all I am looking for on Friday. I hope the Westerners are ready to show me what we got!

CAMP SURPRISE
Junior Jacob Medrano has come into camp and really turned heads. I think he has finally hit his stride and is doing some good things on the field for is. If he continues this pace he will be seeing serious action on the field somewhere. I’m very proud of what he has done thus far.

We have had plenty of surprises. I will share more in the coming days. It’s nice to see some guys come out of nowhere and impress you.

HE HAS HANDS
6’4″ WR Jordan High has displayed some great hands in camp. He has a big frame and will be hard to defend just because of his sheer size. Add to his arsenal the ability to catch the ball anywhere on the field and you will see a potential all district wide receiver. I’m glad we have Jordan on our side!
